Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit an Economic Adviser.

Main Purpose of Job:

  • Reporting to the Head of Economics and Prosperity, the Economic Adviser will provide support to the Embassy?s growing prosperity work, notably through research and reporting on bilateral economic relations and pandemic response, and co-delivery of external engagement activities.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Reporting: draft regular economic reporting and policy analysis pieces to keep internal and external customers informed of key economic developments in Portugal; conduct research projects on UK-Portugal bilateral economic relations following the UK?s departure from the EU and; on the economics of Covid response in Portugal.
  • Events: Working closely with policy-leads and the Programme and Campaigns Officer, organise and co-deliver a number of outreach and external engagement events and activities, including to deliver Post objectives around COP26; act as ?comms champion? within the Economics and Prosperity team.
  • Prosperity: undertake analysis and primary research to build the evidence base for our prosperity work and, working closely with the SIN Officer, co-deliver specific priority themes within the SIN Business Plan.
  • Support: provide administrative support to the Economics and Prosperity team, including procurement and financial tasks.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Full professional proficiency in English and Portuguese (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Completed undergraduate degree (or finalising masters degree) in the fields of Economics, Finance or International Relations (with a strong economic content);
  • Good communication skills (oral and written);
  • Fluent in English and Portuguese;
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Previous work experience and/or evidence of working in teams and projects;
  • Ability to think strategically to spot opportunities.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract of 12 months (35 net per week), with the possibility of renewal subject to a 30 days probation period.

The British Embassy in Lisbon aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role of ?21,379.68 gross annual salary paid in fourteen instalments; plus a monthly meal allowance of ?134.00. This salary is payable if the successful candidate is subject to individual income tax (IRS) in Portugal on the employment income in question. If the successful candidate is not subject to individual income tax (IRS) on their employment income in Portugal, and/or is not taxable elsewhere on such income, he / she will receive the above salary minus a reference amount approximate to the level of Portuguese tax that would be applicable if the income were subject to tax locally. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

All staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Portugal are subject to local Portuguese employment law as well as internal regulations in force at any given time.

The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Portugal in order to apply.

The Embassy will not consider applications from existing staff who have not successfully completed their probation period or, in the case of staff on temporary contract who have not yet completed two thirds of their contract.
