    1. Scientific Area: Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences.

    2. Activity objectives

    (1) Experimental testing for the characterization of storage, cold storage and post-harvest fruit packaging;

    (2) Quantification of reference operation times and parameters, based on experimental data in a controlled and modified atmospheres;

    (3) Experimental tests concerning active and/or intelligent (including monitoring devices) packaging technological solutions;

    (4) Development of a computational predictive tool to provide support for real-time decision-making in the production, sale, distribution, marketing and storage.

    (5) Computer front-end software of predictive tools.

    The expected outcome of the research work requires at least 2 scientific publications (1 in international conference and 1 in peer review international journals) during the grant period.

    3. Admission Requirements:

    • Be a student enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to a doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Sciences, or Electrical Engineering or similar scope degree or enrolled in a non-academic degree course;
    • Knowledge in Heat and Mass Transfer, Acquisition systems and measuring probes, Java, C, C++ programming languages, web development are preferable factors.

    4. Work plan:

    This grant comprises the:

    (1) Experimental testing for the characterization of storage, cold storage and post-harvest fruit packaging;

    (2) Quantification of reference operation times and parameters, based on experimental data in a controlled and modified atmospheres;

    (3) Experimental tests concerning active and/or intelligent (including monitoring devices) packaging technological solutions;

    (4) Development of a computational predictive tool to provide support for real-time decision-making in the production, sale, distribution, marketing and storage.

    (5) Computer front-end software of predictive tools.

    The expected outcome of the research work requires at least 3 scientific publications (1 in international conference and 2 in peer review international journals) during the grant period.

    5. Legislation and applicable regulations:

    Research Fellow's Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of 18th august, in its current wording (amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of 28th august); Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology in force (Regulation No. 950/2019); Research Grants Regulation of the University of Beira Interior (Regulation nº 100/2020).

    6. Place of Work: The work will be developed at the premises of C-MAST-Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and Technologies and Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, under the scientific guidance of Professor Pedro Dinis Gaspar.

    7. Duration and activity regime

    The scholarship is expected to start in September 2020 and has a duration of 6 months. The activity will take place on an exclusive dedication basis, according to the RBIUBI.

    8. Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance:

    The Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance of the scholarship corresponds in accordance with Appendix I of the UBI Research Scholarship Regulation, to the amount of ? 1064. To this amount is added voluntary social insurance, if the candidate chooses to be assigned, as well as personal accident insurance.

    9. Selection methods:

    The selection and ranking of the candidates will be carried out in the first phase based on the following parameters and on a scale from 0 to 20: A - Curriculum vitae/Academic evaluation (30%); B - Suitability of the candidates? profile to the project based on the relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan (60%); C - Fluency in oral and written English (10%).

    A second evaluation phase will be included for the two candidates who have obtained the highest marks. An interview (which can be done by video-conference) will assess their profile as a researcher, which will take into account aspects such as specific knowledge and proven experience in the field, motivation, availability, commitment, among other aspects. The final classification will be calculated as the average between the classification obtained in the first phase (50% weighting) and the classification obtained in the interview (50% weighting), and expressed in the scale of 0 to 20 points.

    11. Form of publication / notification of results:

    The results of the evaluation will be publicized through a list sorted by final grade obtained, posted in a visible and public place of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal. All accepted candidate will be notified by email, and they may use the right of hearing of interested parties, under the terms provided for in the Code of Administrative Procedure.

    12. Application documents:

    1. Proof of enrollment in a Higher Education Institution in a cycle of studies conferring an academic doctorate degree, or proof of enrollment in a cycle of studies not conferring an academic degree for BI scholarships. For the latter it is required to provide the certificate of Master degree and if the academic degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it should obey the Decree-Law 66/2018, of 16 August and Ordinance n.º 33/2019, of 25 January;

    2. Documents proving the ownership of academic degrees and diplomas (can be replaced by a declaration of commitment of honor (see available model). These documents are valid until contract signature;

    3. Cover letter explaining the interest in the position, detailed Curriculum Vitae with transcripts. Copy of the relevant certificates. Applications that are incomplete or do not comply with the above instructions may not be evaluated.
