Reporting Line

The Junior Geospatial Analyst reports to Director of Department 4. Monitoring and Diagnostic


Technical Focus

The Work will be done in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams of machine learning engineers, data scientists and data manager/GIS specialist using the latest tools, technologies and techniques. Candidates should have self-motivation, curiosity and passion for undertaking geospatial analyses to be applied to agriculture and translate in practical and manageable decision support tools for practitioners.


Candidates must have:

  • University Master or PhD qualification in Environmental science, Forestry, Agronomy, Biology, Geography, Engineering
  • Previous experience in fieldwork and knowledge of survey design and field methods
  • Experience in GIS and basic spatial analysis
  • Demonstrable skills in either python or R and their use in simple models (GLM, linear regression)
  • Good level of English

Additional notes:

1. Previous experience in drone/satellite image analysis is an advantage, but not essential.

2. Immediate availability is an advantage.


Tasks and responsibilities

The geospatial analyst will perform the following duties:

  • Participate in fieldwork to monitor pests or diseases in Mediterranean ecosystem ensuring data quality throughout the process.
  • If not directly collected in the field, identify best spatial datasets to support the work Analyse and map datasets using GIS and statistics (with R or python)
  • Identify models that best suit the data analysis
  • Prepare and publish quality digital maps with appropriate and compliant metadata using QGIS.
  • Contribute with project ideas to enhance and broaden the portfolio of geo-spatial data services of the team
  • Write reports
  • In case of previous knowledge, carry out analysis of drone/satellite images ensuring data quality throughout the process.

InnovPlantProtect is a private non-profit association

InnovPlantProtect aims to create innovation for the protection of crops, seeds, and postharvest products, in particular through:

  • Development of new technologies and knowledge, as well as the improvement of previously developed technologies, to protect crops, seeds and post-harvest products, as well as their intellectual protection and availability;
  • Development of applied scientific research to introduce the developed technologies in the market, and to develop processes and products;
  • Provide technical support to companies and entities, public or private, assisting them in the introduction of biotechnological strategies, methods and processes, and in the orientation and implementation of industrial research and development, directed towards the protection of crops, seeds and post-harvest products;
  • Collaboration with public or private institutions, national or foreign in their areas of activity.


Workplace

InnovPlantProtect, at the INIAV Elvas, Portugal, in the former National Plant Breeding Station.


Salary and contract

A full-time contract will be offered, starting 1st April, 2022.The contract will last until December 31, 2022, and will be renewed past 2022 depending on further financial support. All the activities to be developed will be subject to confidentiality clauses.

The gross value of the remuneration will be ?1.544,00(MSc) or ?2.025,35(PhD) (14 month, with 4,77? for meal allowance).
