Qualifications

  • Qualification as a lawyer
  • 3 years of professional experience with one or more of a law firm, in-house legal department or organization with a commercial law and contract focus
  • Strong background in one of the following areas: banking and finance, M&A, litigation and/or IP will be considered favorably
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to handle high volume of work efficiently, recognize priorities, manage time effectively and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with moderate supervision in a decentralized, challenging and fast-paced environment

Who You'll Work With

You will be based in our Madrid or Lisbon office as part of our legal department. You will work directly with our associate general counsel based in Lisbon, Portugal and will work closely with other lawyers in Europe and in the department. You will liaise with a number of individuals within the firm (e.g. partners, finance colleagues, corporate tax team, professional development and office and sector leadership, local administrative leaders) as well as outside counsel in Iberia. The global legal department is a diverse and dynamic organization within our firm headed up by the general counsel with teams for each region including Europe. The legal department provides comprehensive legal services and broad risk management support to the firm?s leadership, consultants and non-consulting staff.

What You'll Do

You will be responsible for handling the preparation, review, draft and negotiation of commercial contracts in Portugal and Spain as well as other geographies in Europe. In this role, your work will include advising internal clients on legal issues related thereto, under the supervision and guidance of the associate general counsel and other legal department attorneys in Europe. You will draft, review and negotiate specific types of contracts such as waiver letters, confidentiality agreements, statements of work, master consulting agreements, study-specific consulting agreements, vendors agreements, private equity agreements and benchmarking agreements. You will review and assist teams with RFP (Request For Proposal) responses. You will also work on internal compliance and risk management issues. In addition, you will create, update and distribute standard contracts and related documentation in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. You will help monitor and track contract flow volume. You will also manage a database of contractual arrangements as well as design, manage and maintain a system to track whether contracts have been executed including a reminder system for any required follow-up. Furthermore, you will provide our consultants with appropriate forms of agreement on a variety of engagement-related legal issues. You will advise them on legal issues related to commercial contracts. You will participate in the development, implementation and interpretation of our firm's policies and professional standards and you'll provide legal counsel to non-consulting staff on internal operating matters. You will work with colleagues of the legal department on projects in support of firm initiatives and will provide backup to paralegals on contracts-related and other responsibilities. You will keep abreast of key developments in law, regulation in Iberia that may affect McKinsey activity, and provide direction as well as day-to-day operational support for McKinsey?s business activities.
