NOTICE OF THE OPENNING OF AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR RECRUITMENT ONE POST-DOC RESEARCHER

Ana Cristina Freire, Full Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of Oporto University, advertises the opening for 10 working days of an international competition for recruitment on ONE PhD researcher, within the Projeto de Investigação Científica ?S3 Altimetry GPD+ Wet Tropospheric Correction (GPD4S3)?, Reference: GPD4S3, Contract nº EUM/CO/21/4600002527/CLo Order 4500021007, funded by EUMETSAT.

Admission requirements: Application can be submitted by any nationals, foreigners and stateless persons who:

  • Hold a PhD degree in the scientific field of Surveying Engineering;
  • Have research experience in the scientific field of Satellite Altimetry, proven by publications in peer-review journals.

If the candidate holds a doctorate awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions established in the Decree-Law no. 66/2018. All the formalities established in the Decree-Law must be met until the hiring

Work program:

  • Development of research activities aiming at fulfilling the objectives of the Satellite Altimetry group at DGAOT/FCUP:
  • Maintenance and development of improved algorithms for the estimation of the wet tropospheric correction of satellite altimetry measurements;
  • Exploitation and development of methodologies for the processing of the measurements from on-board microwave radiometers, in particular over ocean-land transition zones;
  • Exploitation of methodologies to determine the atmospheric attenuation in the altimeter backscattering coefficient, from microwave radiometer measurements and its improvement in coastal regions;
  • Various tasks in the scope of the ongoing projects at DGAOT/FCUP, related with the topics described above;
  • Possibility of teaching service at the DGAOT/FCUP. (Up to four teaching hours per week, on an annual average according to Article 12, paragraph 3 of Regulation No. 487/2020 of Research, Science and Technology Staff at the University of Porto).

Legal Framework:

Decree-Law Nº, 57/2016 of 29th August, amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 19th July, establishing the Regulation of Scientific Employment (Regime Jurídico do Emprego Científico - RJEC); Regulatory Law no. 11-A/2017 of 29th December; the Labour Code in the current version of Law no. 7/2009 of 12th February.


Regulation no. 487/2020 of the Science and Technology Research Staff of the University of Porto, published in the 2nd series of Diário da República no. 100/2020 on May 22nd.


The place of work: Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto, Departamento de Geociências, Ambiente e Ordenamento do Território (DGAOT).


Duration of contract: The present work contract is due to start on july 2021 and will be maintained only for the period due to accomplish the tasks of the work program.


Remuneration: the monthly remuneration to be attributed is the one provided in article 2 of Regulatory Decree n. 11-A / 2017 of 29 December, corresponding to Level 33 of the Single Remuneration Table (2,134.73 Euros).


Methods of selection and definition of their weights/evolution criteria:

The evaluation of the scientific and curricular path focuses on the relevance, quality, timeliness and suitability of their path to the functions to be performed, according to the weights defined below and the curricular criteria:

C1: Quality of CV (scale 0-100), where it should be evidenced:

  • Publications in journals of international circulation with scientific arbitration and quotations (55%);
  • Participation in conferences, seminars and advanced schools (20%);
  • Extent and relevance of participation in previous projects (15%);
  • Other scientific merits (10%).

C2: Previous research experience in the relevant field (scale 0-100).


The final grade of the curricular evaluation (CCS) will be obtained by the expression:

CCS = 0.5*C1 + 0.5*C2


The three best candidates, according to the punctuation in the curricular criteria (CCS) will be called to an interview with the selection jury, which can take place via Zoom videoconference. The interview score (IS) will be expressed in the 0 - 100 scale.


The final grade (FS) of the candidates admitted for the interview will be determined according to the expression:

FS = 0.9*CCS + 0.1*IS


The Selection Committee shall deliberate by means of a nominal vote based on the selection criteria adopted and published. Abstentions are not allowed.

Results notifications:

Lists of admitted and excluded candidates, as well as the final ranking lists, will be published and advertised on the webpage of this call at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, and all candidates will be notified by under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure.

  • Application;
  • Copy of the PhD diploma or certificate ;
  • Detailed Curriculum vitae;
  • Brief description of the most relevant scientific activities for the last 5 years;
  • Other documents deemed important by the candidate for the evaluation.

Those candidates who have submitted their applications in an improper manner or fail to fulfil the requirements of this call are excluded from admission. In case of doubt, the Selection Committee can request any candidate to present further documentation to support their statements.

False statements provided by candidates are punishable by law.
