By decision of the Board of Directors, NOVA.id.FCT - Associação para a Inovação e Desenvolvimento da FCT (?NOVA.id.FCT?) opens an international call to hire a PhD Researcher , with the internal reference ?#NOVAID151?, under a unfixed term employment contract to conduct research activities in the area of data science applied to the environment and sustainability fields, in the scope of the R & D Unit " CENSE ? Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research? (UIDP/04085/2020), financed by ?Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnolgia, I.P.?.
The hiring of the PhD Researcher shall be made by means of an Unfixed Term Employment Contract entered into in accordance with the Portuguese Labour Code approved by the Law no. 7/2009 of February 12th, as amended. The contract should have a forecasted duration of 30 months and should not be extended further than the project duration. The contract should begin in July 15th, 2021.
The present hiring procedure is further governed inter alia by Decree-law no. 57/2016 of July 19th, as amended by the Law no. 57/2017 of August 29thand Regulatory decree no. 11-A/2017 of December 29th.
The PhD Researcher will carry out research activities in the field of Data Science applied to the environment and sustainability fields. Key activities include:
- development of tools and algorithms, through free software and "cloud computing", and use of advanced methods and techniques of data analysis and "machine learning", to understand problems and create solutions through the extraction of information and knowledge from complex or large data sets;
- support for researchers and PhD students from CENSE, namely by integrating this area in research work taking place in the research areas of CENSE;
- analysis, treatment, interpretation and presentation of environmental, social and economic data, taking into account the inter- and transdisciplinary nature of the research carried out at CENSE;
- preparation of scientific data, preferably for digital publication;
- planning, creation and optimization of experimental protocols;
- exploration and access to global databases related to the environment and sustainability.
The PhD Researcher shall fully devote the whole of his/her professional activity to NOVA.id.FCT, on an exclusive basis.
The PhD Researcher?s working place shall be at the premises of CENSE located in Departamento de Ciências e Engenharia do Ambiente, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Campus de Caparica, 2829-516 Caparica, without prejudice to the provision of work on a teleworking basis when this is compatible with that, agreed between the parties or legally required, and will carry out all trips, in Portugal or abroad, inherent to their functions or as necessary for his/her activity.
The PhD Researcher shall earn a monthly remuneration in the gross amount of ? 2.134,73 by reference to the 1st grade of the salary scale, pursuant to number 2 of Article 15 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of July 19 th, as amended by Law no. 57/2017 of August 29th, and Regulatory Decree no. 11-A/2017 of December 29th.
Applicants to this call may be national, foreign or stateless candidates holding a PhD degree in the field of data science or similar area , legally valid and/or recognized in Portugal and complying with the following specific requirements:
a. To hold a PhD degree for at least 2 years;
b. Have proven experience and knowledge of techniques and methods of multivariate statistical analysis, "Data Mining", "Machine Learning" and in the use of C ++, MATLAB, R, PYTHON or similar tools;
c. Have demonstrated experience in processing data resulting from scientific activities, or developed in a business context or in support of public policies, in national or international organizations, preferably in at least one of CENSE's research areas;
d. Have publications in international scientific journals indexed, or conferences of equivalent relevance, using techniques and methods of data analysis, preferably applied in at least one of CENSE's research areas.
Applications shall be subject to evaluation by a jury that shall follow the procedure established in articles 13 and 14 (by virtue of article 19) of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of July 19th, as amended by Law no. 57/2017 of August 29th.
Pursuant to Article 13 of Decree-Law no. 57/2016 the jury is composed of the following members:
- Substitute Member: Doutor Eduardo Mateus, Investigador do CENSE - FCT NOVA.
The selection of the successful candidate will be carried out through the evaluation of the scientific and curricular achievements as established by Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 19 July, as amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 29 August and the selection criteria (scored on a scale 0 to 20) and their respective weighting shall be as follows:
a) Relevance, quality and actuality of the experience acquired in the study, treatment and analysis of data, resulting from scientific activities, using techniques and methods of multivariate analysis, ?Data Mining?, ?Machine Learning? and Experimental Design and the use of C ++, MATLAB, R, PYTHON or similar tools (40%)
b) Relevance, quality and actuality of the scientific production of the last 5 years, taking into account above all the intrinsic quality of the scientific content of the activity, and not only the metrics of publication, and the disciplinary specificity and its adequacy to the R&D activities developed by the CENSE (50%);
c) Quality of the Individual Interview (10%).
The interview will only be conducted to candidates whose weighted classification is higher than 16 in the first two criteria.
8. Final Decision
The final deliberation of the jury shall be homologated by the ultimate governing body of NOVA.id.FCT that is also responsible for the decision of hiring.
The list of admitted and excluded candidates and the final list of classification will be publicised on the website of NOVA.id.FCT (www.novaidfct.pt) and sent by electronic mail with receipt of delivery to all candidates.
9. Submission of Applications

- Certificates of qualifications, duly registered and / or recognized in Portugal;
