1 Post-doctoral research position announcement

February 2, 2021

There is an open call for tender for the attribution of one Post-doctoral research within the project ?UNRAVEL - Unraveling the drivers and impacts of invaders in a changing world?, PTDC/BIA-ECO/0207/2020, financed by national funds through FCT ? Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, in the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Ecology, Biology.

Required background and skills:

Two alternative profiles are acceptable for this post

Profile 1 ? PhD in Mathematics or Physics. Solid skills in modelling network-related dynamics. Good programming skills are a must.

Profile 2 - PhD in Biology, Ecology, or related fields. Proven experience with environmental modelling, numerical analysis of ecological data, and /or macroecology. Good programming skills are a must.

Language: English as a first or second language is required.

Publication record: Candidates are expected to have a good publication record in internationally refereed journals.

Regarding post-doctoral research grants (BIPD), at the level of the requirements to be verified for their grant (Article 7 of FCT Research Grant Regulations, No. 950/2019), it is highlighted the need for the doctoral degree to have been obtained in the 3 years prior to the date of submission of the application for the grant and, at the level of its implementation, the fact that it can only be renewed until the maximum period of 3 years.

Work plan: The deliberate or accidental introduction of species outside their native range is one of the main components of anthropogenic?induced global changes. Biological invasions have been increasing in number and affecting larger areas, with deep reaching impacts on ecosystems, economic activity and human welfare. As a result, invasive species now rank among the top threats to global biodiversity, and annual monetary impacts of invasives are estimated at 120 billion ? in the USA and at least ?12 billion in Europe. This threat urges global and regional organisations, national governments and local agencies to implement improved and integrated strategies to counter existing invasions and prevent new ones. The successful candidate will integrate a large cohort of researchers working on invasion biology, and will endeavour to model risk of invasions using information on trade and environmental and socio-economic predictors.

Legislation framework: The Research Grant will be conceded through a contract between the University of Évora and the research fellow, under the terms of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute (Law nº40/2004 of August 18 and decree law nº 123/2019 of August 28) and in accordance with the legislation and Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P, regulation nº950/2019 of December 16, 2019 https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt .

Place of work: The work will be developed at Rui Nabeiro Biodiversity Research Chair at the University of Évora, under the scientific orientation of Professor Miguel Bastos Araújo.

Duration and Starting date: 6 months, eventually renewable until the end of the project. Starting in March, 2021.

Stipend: Monthly stipend is ?1616 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis.

Evaluation Methods: Evaluation will be based on academic qualifications (25%), motivation and interest in the project (25%), demonstrated experience and skills in relevant areas (50%). There may be resorting to interviews. The jury reserves the right to not select any candidate, if submitted applications do not meet the required profile.

Evaluation Panel: Doctor Miguel Bastos Araújo (president), Doctor Luís Reino (member), Doctor Joana Teixeira (member), Doctor Diogo Alagador (alternate juror) and Doctor Frederico Mestre (alternate juror).

Results: The final results will be affixed in a visible and public place at Rui Nabeiro Biodiversity Research Chair - University of Évora and candidates will be notified by email.

Application: The competition is open from February 10 to February 24, 2021. Applications should be sent by email to [email protected] . The application must include a cover letter (in English) explaining why you think you are an adequate candidate for the post, a short CV (please no more than 5 pages), external links to five of your most relevant papers, and the names and contacts of two academics that can provide a reference for you.
