Coimbra Coimbra (Educação / Formação)

Research positions for two Bolsas de Investigação (BI) are opened at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the project VIEXPAND - Video for Expanded Vision in Remote Operations, reference CENTRO 2020 Co-Promoção nº 046986, funded by Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER) within Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (COMPETE 2020).
Scientific Area:
Information and Data Sciences
Group:
Multimedia Signal Processing ? Lr
Admission Requirements:
Students enrolled in a master's degree, integrated master's degree, or graduates enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated within a higher education institution, in the area of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Preference will be given to candidates having a solid background in: Image and Video Processing; C/C++/OpenCV/python programming; machine learning, evidence of self-motivation for scientific research and ability for teamwork.
Work Objectives:
This project aims to investigate algorithms and methods for processing and coding of visual information in industrial environments, integrated in remote surveillance and monitoring systems using specific hardware and wireless communications. The research tasks deal with industrial video content, acquired by a system with multiple cameras, possibly synchronized at frame level. One of the tasks in the project is to investigate computational methods for automatic identification of regions of interest in specific industrial case-studies and extraction of relevant features as part of a big data process within the context of industry 4.0. The other research task of the project is the development of efficient coding mechanisms to encode the captured video along with regions-of-interest and extracted features, integrated in a standard encoder to compress and then transmit the video stream in a robust manner. The whole system will be capturing, processing and transmitting in real-time. The research work involves image and video processing algorithms, machine learning approaches for identification and feature extraction of regions of interest and optimization techniques for real-time image and video compression in hardware-based systems.
Applicable legislation:
Applicable legislation: A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT, ?Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações? fellowships? and ?Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação?, according to Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), in its actual redaction, and also by Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. Fellowship Regulation of Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia. For direct access to the FCT RBI go to the following link https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt (Reg. 950/2019, published in the DR of 16 December).
Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at Leiria, under the supervision of Professor Pedro António Amado de Assunção
Duration:
12 months with the possibility of renewal. Start date: 15 st of March 2021 (or soon thereafter).

805,98 ? (net), according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Selection criteria:

  • C1 (45%)
    Curriculum vitae/Academic evaluation
  • C2 (30%)
Suitability of the candidates? profile to the project based on the relevant experience in image and video processing within the scope of the tasks described in the work plan
  • C3 (5%)
Fluency in oral and written English
  • C4 (20%)
    Interview

Candidates may be interviewed for clarification of any aspect related to the above criteria
Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 45% + C2 x 30% + C3 x 5% + C4 x 20%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
