Research positions for two Bolsas de Investigação (BI) are opened at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the project VIEXPAND - Video for Expanded Vision in Remote Operations, reference CENTRO 2020 Co-Promoção nº 046986, funded by Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER) within Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (COMPETE 2020).
Scientific Area:
Information and Data Sciences
Group:
Multimedia Signal Processing ? Lr
Admission Requirements:
Students enrolled in a master's degree, integrated master's degree, or graduates enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated within a higher education institution, in the area of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Preference will be given to candidates having a solid background in: Image and Video Processing; C/C++/OpenCV/python programming; machine learning, evidence of self-motivation for scientific research and ability for teamwork.
Work Objectives:
This project aims to investigate algorithms and methods for processing and coding of visual information in industrial environments, integrated in remote surveillance and monitoring systems using specific hardware and wireless communications. The research tasks deal with industrial video content, acquired by a system with multiple cameras, possibly synchronized at frame level. One of the tasks in the project is to investigate computational methods for automatic identification of regions of interest in specific industrial case-studies and extraction of relevant features as part of a big data process within the context of industry 4.0. The other research task of the project is the development of efficient coding mechanisms to encode the captured video along with regions-of-interest and extracted features, integrated in a standard encoder to compress and then transmit the video stream in a robust manner. The whole system will be capturing, processing and transmitting in real-time. The research work involves image and video processing algorithms, machine learning approaches for identification and feature extraction of regions of interest and optimization techniques for real-time image and video compression in hardware-based systems.
