Admission Requirements:
Master (mestrado, 2nd cycle) in Electrical and Computer Engineering or Computer Science, with a combined 1st and 2nd cycles grade point average no less than 14 on a 20 scale. Solid certified programming skills using C/C++ and Matlab. The candidates must be enrolled in a doctoral program.
Work Objectives:
The work to be performed with the support of this grant is focused on the development of efficient scalable LiDAR point clouds coding methods, with random access functionalities and preferably compatible with existing or under development standard image and video encoders. The method(s) to be developed will be tested through the creation of a prototype codec and the use of standard lidar point clouds datasets. Depending on their quality the results will be divulged at specialty conferences or published in a high ranking journal.

Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações in Coimbra, under the supervision of Professor Luis A. da Silva Cruz. If the current lab attendance restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic still apply during the scholarship, work will be done remotely, coordinated through frequent meetings by videoconference tools and at least one monthly in-person meeting at Instituto de Telecomunicações Coimbra premises.
Duration:
6 months. Start date: 1st April 2021 (or soon thereafter).
Monthly salary:
1.074,64 ? (net), according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
