A research grant is available at the University of Coimbra on the BUBBLES ? Defining the BUilding Basic BLocks for a U-Space SEparation Management Service ? project (grant agreement 893206), with the following characteristics:

Type of activity: The work to be developed aims at defining the basis for obtaining assurances regarding key properties of machine learning based systems, namely the software systems supporting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that have to operate in strict safety conditions.
T1: Analyze and map the state of the art on verification techniques that allow obtaining assurances of machine learning systems;
T2: Study the sources of uncertainty that may impact on the decisions of machine learning based systems.
T3: Associate sources of uncertainty to key properties of the system (e.g., safety) and identify ways of identifying their degree of coupling.
Financial support: Own revenues.
Applicant profile: Masters in Informatics Engineering or similar, enrolled in a PhD in Information Science and Technology, Computer Engineering or similar.
Location: Department of Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra.
Duration: Six (6) months.
Renewal: Possibly renewable until the final deadline for the project.
Scientific Orientation: Professor Carlos Nuno Bizarro e Silva Laranjeiro and Professor César Alexandre Domingues Teixeira.
Financial conditions: The amount of the grant is ? 1.074,64 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en), plus annual tuition fees for a doctoral course, with a maximum value of ? 2.750, social security (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contributions) and personal accidents insurance. The payment will be made by bank transfer. This amount will not be increased during the entire period of the grant duration.
Regime: The attribution of the grant does not generate or entitle a relation of a legal-labour nature, it is undertaken in an exclusive dedication regime and the fellow is granted with the Fellow Statute of the University of Coimbra, according to Research Grant Statute, and the Regulation of Research Grants of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. , both in its actual wording.
Selection methods: Curricular evaluation (60%) and interview (40%).
Selection and attribution criteria: Curricular evaluation: Final classification of the master (30%);
Academic performance in chairs in the area of software engineering and machine learning (20%); Scientific publications and communications (10%).
Interview: Interest in acquiring knowledge and research in the machine learning based systems area (30%); Motivation (10%).
Formalization of application: Detailed CV; Proof of enrollment in PhD; Copy of the Master's Certificate, with list of grades obtained; Declaration of honor on the benefit of other previous scholarships awarded under the current FCT Scholarship Regulation.
Under the terms of article 25 of Decree Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August, ?In situations where recognition of an academic degree or foreign diploma is a condition of eligibility for access to public support for research in science, technology and innovation, the national agencies competent for the attribution of the same must dispense with the verification of this requirement in the application phase for the support in question and proceed with the verification of this condition only in the contractualization phase ?.
Candidates with foreign academic diplomas are obliged to present records of the recognition of such diplomas according to the Portuguese law.

Additional information: The evaluation results will be announced within 90 days after the end of the applications submission deadline, by notifying the applicants via email. After the announcement of the results, candidates are considered automatically notified to, if they wish to do so, comment on the results on a preliminary hearing period within 10 days after that date. After this, the selected candidates will have to declare in writing their acceptance. Unless a justification worthy of consideration is presented, if the declaration is not submitted within the referred period, it is considered that the candidate waivers the grant. In case of resignation or withdrawal of the selected candidate, the next candidate with the highest evaluation score will be notified immediately.
